It seems like all the full metal AEG's are firing around 430-450FPS. I picked up a Dan Wesson 6" revolver and it is rated at 450. I had my wife shot me with it, which she had on problem doing when she heard how much it was at about 20-30ft and it didn't leave a mark. Just wearing a loose t-shirt. A paint ball at the same distance at 300FPS would have left a mark.

it maybe rated 450fps but the actual fps might be lower if it didnt leave a mark at that range. gas in cold/cooler temperature decreases fps.

Well actually any AEG regardless of build material's can shoot at those speeds. Full metal bodies is just that, full metal, which is mostly liked by many, however plastic bodies are much lighter but overtime do crack if you get too rough with them. Most FPS limits are based safety for the club members. 400 fps is the most common average speed for any AEG plus or minus 15fps (spring settlement). DMR limits is 420 to 450 fps with a min 60ft. engagement distance (mandatory sidearm rated at a lower speed preferred) regardless if it is a AEG, Springer, or Gas powered platform. Again, all base on safety. Allot of new pistols on the market are shooting hotter, which I mean over 400fps, which leads to problems for us Admins to consider if it is allowed or not to be used on the field.

Now with Airsoft BB's VS PB Balls you have to consider mass, weight and enegry. PB Balls are .68 caliber (17.3 mm) and weight of 3.190 g VS Airsoft pellets which is 6 mm in diameter and weigh between 0.12 and 0.48 g. (NOTE* Do not .12g BB's for your AEG's)
A more closer details can be found here ---> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airsoft_pellets

There are a few speeds to work with in Airsoft, which all depends on what you wish to do, either Rifleman, DMR, Sniper or LSW(similar to rifleman).

400 FPS is the limit not a goal, that being said admins will let you use a new gun @ 415 and change your MED's hoping after a few games it'll drop.
Note: Some will not and put you in a DMR class where you will need a side arm within the FPS of that class (350-)

You can change the FPS of any rifle by changing the spring, that means in most but not all AEG's you have to take the gearbox apart.

There are stores that will do that as well there are guntec's on the fourm as well.
Hope this helps and we'll see you
soon :)

Getting bruises is all about the energy transferred to your flesh. Let's consider a quick comparison, ignoring the loss of energy from the muzzle to the impact at 20 ft.

Energy carried by each ammo at the muzzle (0 ft range):
  • standard 0.20 g BB (450 ft/s rifle) carries approximately 1.88 J (bb), which drops as the BB travels through the air
  • 15 g paintball (300 ft/s marker) carries approximately 60.75 J (paintball), which drops quickly as the paintball travels through the air

This suggests that the energy a paintball carries is significantly greater than the tiny BB (32 times greater), despite the drastic effects of drag. If we can apply the inverse square law, the paintball will lose energy with the square of the distance (6 m), which could bring it down to a similar level as the BB.

Further, the paintball will deform and explode, transferring 100% of the energy to your body. The BB will ricochet, carrying some energy away with it and transferring very little to your body.

We don’t base out FPS decisions on the threshold of pain. We base it on Airsoft Canada and what the most recognised fps limits are.

There is no way it’s going to change so I would suggest downgrading your AEG, or using your 400-450FPS whatever you have as a DMR.

I say this time and time again, and I believe rampage said it as well, 450FPS is a limit, not a goal. A well tuned 400FPS AEG will outperform a 450FPS DMR in every way, shape and form. Spend more time tuning what you already have and seeing what bucking/nub/barrel/chamber/bb weight works best with your setup.

So Mikefxd ,

yes your AEG can be adjusted to what ever you want it to be at. You will then use it (play) in the catagoue of the final FPS of the gun.

Now for your Dan Wesson 6" revolver chronoing at 440fps to 450fps can be used, BUT you have a MED. of 60ft. classifed as a DMR. Therefore you will need a gun that shoots under 350fps to engage in any close gunfights under 40ft. (clearing a building, thick bush, tall grass, CQB in the city @ panther.)
