Goggle Ratings

Post2014-05-22 / 02:40 UTC GMT +00:00

Looking into a goggle setup, and wondering about how the field handles goggle ratings. Are they concerned only about the lenses themselves? Or do they also take into account the frame that the lenses are mounted in?

Just for hypothetical purposes, lets assume we had a fully enclosed helmet with dual paned anzi z87+ lenses each 2mm thick. The frame however, has no rating for either paintball or airsoft, but we can assume it is constructed of a rather robust nylon material which is approximately 10 mm thick in most places.

Similar question: what about a fully approved paintball lens mounted in afore-mentioned unrated frame?

Is the field going to say great the lenses are acceptable and you can use that? Or are they going to go hell no! On another note, what's the club's stance?

Yes I know the value of my eyes, and I plan to do a bunch of extensive testing before I decide whether or not to adopt said equipment. But I don't want to go to the effort if the field is just going to say no.

The page linked below has text from the Z87 standard.

So, technically, the Z87 always covers the system.

Well some of the newer goggles have VERY soft rubber around the lense and no one has said they cant be used, yet.
My understanding is if a bb can pass thru with a reasonable amount of pressure the goggles can not be used. But the lense must have the proper rating.
Some people think I am trying to be sneaky, its really that my eyes are not as good and I have to make sure its a tree and not the enemy! Trees do not call hits. I have shot a few.
