Oh OK, is cutting and finishing a longer barrel ill advised?

I won't be cutting, I was unaware you could put shorter barrels into a gun, here I've been searching high and low for the same size barrel lol

Try 0.28 because right now your rifle is shooting slightly over 400fps with 0.20g. From 0.25g to 0.28g it will increase the range and accuracy a little if not much. I am not sure the WELL's hop-up system but if its curving to one side, it's either the BB is light or your hop-up needs adjustment. Other hop-up system is a 2 screws system where you can adjust left and right. If your goal is to be able to hit a man size target at 150' with your stock rifle that is 400fps (0.20), that is achievable. Come out on Sunday and you can try out .28, .30, .36 to see the difference.

The hop up is set so its flying more or less parallel with the ground, a bit of an arch, if I set it one click down it lobs the balls, one click up and the balls tend to take off

I'm going to go out on a limb here, I think I know your issue. It's not uncommon for a player to buy a new gun and said gun to have potential issues. What seems to be the problem here is you have 'Hop Up Gnomes'. These gnomes are the bane of airsoft players around the globe and continually pop up without warning. Not unlike Underpants Gnomes they operate under a similar manifesto, that manifesto being:
1. Commandeer Hop up unit
2.Hook bb's in unintended directions
3. ????
4. Profit
Players have tried many simple and far fetched methods of removing these buggers. One solution that has proven itself time and time again is, Tribal African Shamanism. It's a costly solution but will work guaranteed. Our chosen provider for this miracle working is an African prince who does not want to be named due to potential political backlash. He only asks a small fee with which he will free up the resources required to rid you of these wretched gnomes.

Or it could also be an issue with the weight of the bb. Lighter bb's will tend to hook more than their heavier counterparts. That being said there is also somewhat of a downside depending on how you choose to look at your glass. Heavier weights will fly way more gooder than say the .25's you currently have on hand, but you will also lose some range and fps. I would recommend you come out to a game, like any able bodied person should. Come out and I'm sure players will be willing to help both with potential issues and allowing you to sample the mention higher weight bb's. You will always learn more on your feet than your ass. Just got off the phone with my buddy at milsig here in Richmond and yes going to give me an entire new upper received.

With some more research, I found a lot of vsr rifles have a "curve to the right issue, the hop up guide is bent, needs to be shimmed. This I'm sure is all good and quick to fix, I've seen some videos on YouTube about this issue, but since the gun is 48 hours out of the box with about 150 bbs through it, I shouldn't have to fix it. I'm getting new gun basically.

I don't know much about snipers but I would first clean the barrel. Then check for an improperly seated hop up rubber.

I cleaned it before my first use... I'm not terribly comfortable taking it apart as its my first gun. I've already taken the top half to the store and I'm picking up a new one in the morning

NO gun is going to shoot straight and true out of the box.... maybe a TM but the first thing I do to all my brand new guns is wash the hop up rubber with warm water and soap, clean and polish the barrel and take any excessive grease off the internals. that usually gets things shooting straight and true.

I am going to be at panther this Sunday for a bit. if you want me to take your gun home with and clean everything I can for the low low price of a epic high five and a xlarge double double at MRP on sunday.
