RED DOT VS MAGNIFIED OPTICS.

Post2013-11-22 / 16:10 UTC GMT +00:00

Red Dot Holo Sight Advantages
Holo and Red Dot sights have unlimited eye relief and the good ones have no parallax. Parallax is the distortion of your aim: regardless of how far away from your eye the holosight/red dot scope is, you can still see the dot in the center and on target. Magnified scopes require precise eye position to get the full view out of your scope.

Why does this matter?
Depending on your game style (Infanteer, Rifleman, Support Gunner, Marksman, Sniper, Scout), you need to pick the best tools for your load out. Between two individuals in a 100 ft stand off using AEG’s and looking through their optics, the person with the red dot sight wins most often. The aim is quicker: just put the person in the center of the reticule and squeeze the trigger.

Indoor Play
CQB games such as Indoor games have extremely close ranges. Magnified scopes are useless in that type of (usually urban) setting. If you buy a magnified scope, just take it off and use your iron sights for indoor use.

The most significant limitation to you for CQB games is that the muzzle energy limits are lower. The AEG that serves you well outdoors is too strong for indoor play, more on that below.

Magnified scopes are great
Designated Marksman Rifles benefit from magnified scopes. If your AEG only delivers muzzle velocities around 300-370 ft/s other AEG's set up for DMR (420-450 ft/s) will out-range you. If your AEG is accurate to 150 feet or more, the investment in a magnified scope will be worthwhile.

Plus a magnified scope will enhance your ability to tell if the person in your sight is friend or foe.

Multi-role AEGs and Gun Safety Limit Rules
If you plan to have one AEG for both indoor and outdoor games, you are going to have a tough time because we have set safety limits on the muzzle energy players can field in each setting and for each role.

The MAX FPS in the indoor CQB is 330 ft/s shooting 0.20 g BB's. Let's consider you set up your G36c to shoot that slowly and you are able to use it at the Richmond field. When you take that 330 ft/s gun and go to the large outdoor field at Panther you will be greatly outranged by AEG's that are shooting 400 or 450 ft/s (regular AEG's and DMR's). Conversely, we will not allow your outdoor gun set to 400 ft/s in CQB games.

Summary
Consider which type of field you will play on more often and set your AEG to suit those conditions. The limits are described in the club rulebook and the limit values will be the same at FVAA (Bigfoot in Mission) and BCAC (also mostly at Panther) games
