I've looked through the previous topics and tried to find answers to my questions, so I'm sorry if this is a re-post. I'm just getting into airsoft, and have been overwhelmed with the vast number of guns to choose from.

I do know that I want a gun with 390+ FPS, full metal, and some sort of assault rifle variant. I have looked at all of the sites I could find on the forum, and others, ex. airsoftgi.com, buyairsoft.ca

I have a few main questions:

1) What brands give me the most value for my money? G&G, VFC, what about their subsidiaries?
2) How much money does the average person spend? I think my budget would be max $600. I don't mind spending money on quality, and would rather get a gun that is going to last a long time and be reliable.
3) How much of an FPS increase do you get by changing out the springs?

Go to the retailers!

The choices you listed are both great quality guns.

Important ~ Most good ones will let you hold them all and explain the good things about them.

Less important ~ Make sure you get something you can lug around all day. Pounds make pain.

Not important at all ~ Make sure it matches your boots.

Vital ~ Buy the gun you want to sleep bedside.

Oh and rent one first, and come out to play and ask everyone for their opinions.

First off, FPS does not equal range or accuracy, so don’t think just because one AEG comes out of the box at 500FPS its a good unit.

1)Airsoft brands are somewhat of a personal choice. Its kind of like buying a car, HONDA, FORD, ACURA GM. All good name brands but different people like different makes for different reasons.

G&G was my first AEG and I still use that M4 today. Personally I’m a huge fan boy of G&G. VFC has amazing externals. Figure out what you want out of a AEG and go from there.


Average person has to spend roughly $300 to get into Airsoft. All you need is a gun, magazine mask and BB`s. above and beyond the bare essential cost is totally up to you. i am roughly 10,000 into Airsoft at this point. it’s very addicting.

3) The whole point of changing out a spring is to change the FPS. You can go from 280FPS to 600+FPS if you really wanted to. You will never play with any club with a AEG over 450 but you CAN go over.

I wouldn't worry as much about FPS, most games you can't play if it shoots over 400, and if you buy one that shoots at 395, there is a chance it'll shoot a bit hot one day and you won't be able to game it. Anywhere from 350 to 380 is generally a good spot to make sure you aren't going to end up shooting over the limit.

1) A lot of this depends on what kind of guns you like, if you are an AK fan Real Sword would be a good brand (among others), if you prefer something small like an MP7 you are limited by which brands you can buy. I agree with Dice that going to a local store and getting a feel for a few guns is a great idea before you go spending $600 and realizing that you don't like your choice.
2) If you mean on just the primary gun my guess would be around $400-600 to start with all the accessories for a pretty good quality gun, keep in mind that you will want more than just a gun to play, you will want to have a good pair of boots, probably camo, something to carry your extra magazines in, a kill rag, a secondary weapon (pistol), goggles (preferably with a fan to prevent fogging), other face protection such as a mask. I would really recommend renting from a player and getting a feel for what you need first.
3) Springs can increase or decrease your FPS by a large margin, but if you put too strong of a spring in and the motor can't handle it you can cause additional wear on the gun and it won't last as long, but like I said FPS isn't that big of a deal.

VFC. Solid brand, rugged, amazing out of the box. The only thing I've had to do to mine is drop the spring, and put a new piston in (because I work the trigger travis haley style). Only thing you need to do to one to get it pretty much like a PTW is drop a mosfet and a better motor in it.

I started with G&G, they're great if you're getting into the sport. But let me tell ya, I don't plan on steering away from VFC anytime soon.

I'm having a hard time finding what battery to use with it. I've found people using, 8.4 NiMH, 7.4 Lipo and a 9.6 1600?

No idea what I need, and apparently the battery casing is very small.

Has anyone used a VFC Scar before/and or know what battery works best?
