Question about approved muzzle velocities

Hi guys,

I am new to airsoft, and I am planning on spending a bit of money to get my own gun. After reading through the rules, I noticed that the gun I am planning on buying may have some issues. According to the reviews and comments, it chronos at just over 400FPS. If I am reading the table in the rules correctly, it says that I would only be able to fire at people that are 60ft away or further. I just want to make sure that I am understanding these rules correctly, as I may need to find another gun that allows me to engage at closer ranges.

That graph is a little hard to figure out. 400 is the average for aeg's on our field. 40 ft minimum engagement full auto
20 ft semi auto and no shooting any closer. 350 fps or less and no minimum engagement.

That is correct. Also note, guns shooting between 400-450 fps are limited to semi-fire only and mandatory sidearm or another gun that shoots lower fps. This is kind of a general rule wherever you play.

If you really love the gun, it can be downgraded easily to under 400fps by changing the spring. Some gundocs here would be willing to help you for a small charge or if someone is kind enough would do it for free

Ok so the only time I won't be able to shoot it is anything closer than 20ft right? I'm assuming the required sidearm is used for close quarters?

Any suggestions for a cheap sidearm?

If you buy that gun and it chronos over 400fps you will ned a sidearm that shoots under 400fps and will only be able to shoot people who are 60ft away using semi auto only. Being an m4/16 platform you could easily change the spring lowering the fps below 400 allowing you to shoot full auto at people 40ft and further or semi auto at people 20ft away.

Just a personal suggestion dboys brand guns aren't the best. Might be worth looking more into a more reliable and sought after brand. But if your budget does not allow, that's your choice.

Ok thanks for the help. Is there an FPS limit on side arms? I think I remember reading something about it somewhere but I can't seem to find it again. After browsing the local retailer websites, I found this:

Any thoughts? I don't really want to spend too much on a sidearm. I'm assuming I'll also have to spend some money on a holster? Is the field mostly mid-long range or is it worth investing money into a sidearm for close range play?

EDIT: If I downgrade the gun to shoot below 400FPS, do I still need a sidearm?

If your pistol shoots over 350fps then you can only shoot people 20ft away. Less than 350 and you can shoot them point blank (not recommended)
If your rifle shoots under 400fps you do not require a sidearm though in my experience a sidearm is always nice to have.

I would suggest a gas powered sidearm over the link you have there. I personally have never used an electric pistol but I love the gas ones. More realistic feel when your shooting with gas blowback.

If you post in the Rental section with what game you want to go to you will likely get a couple PM's from people willing to rent out gear. The rates vary depending on what equipment you need and the quality of gear being rented to you. It's best to post and discuss the details with the person who will rent their equipment to you. You'll find that many of us really just want new players to make it out to games and play so the prices are usually pretty reasonable.
