lipo problem.

Post2013-02-21 / 19:29 UTC GMT +00:00

Last week I was using a 11.1v 1200mah 15-25c lipo in my Masada. This battery usually lasts me all day. Mid game I noticed when I shot full auto I could hear the motor winding down as if the battery was dying. I took it out and replaced it with another 11.1 which brought be back up to full power and trigger response.

I used my battery checker on the 11.1 I replaced and it was at 79% battery life.....

Maybe its dying?. Old cell?

I discharged the battery and gave it a good 0.1c charge on my smart charger. I’m thinking that should help. And no I did not discharge below 3v a cell.

Has anybody else had this problem?

One suggestion would be the weather, was it cold outside that day? I have seen cold weather crap out the odd Lipo at times. However I remember it wasn't really that cold last Sunday. Could be a cell might be starting to go bad perhaps.

Yeah, I've had the same thing happen to me too with cold weather crapping out a perfectly good lipo

Don't know what Van is like right now (I'm in AB doing stuff atm.) but I would assume it's climate effects.

It's probably a combination of the temperature (NiCD and NiMH hare less impervious to cold effects), humidity, and air pressure (the last 2 are less of a concern but can affect things somewhat).

However the fact that your lipo monitor said 79% charged leads me to believe that there's probably something going on with the cells themselves or the wiring (I assume you're connecting your battery checker to the balance plug). Whether it's crappy thin wiring on the battery side I don't know. Although the voltage curve of a lipo actually drops quite sharply below 80% charge so it might be cold effects coupled with that voltage dropoff (notice that with a 7.4V it starts off acting like a 9.6V NiMH but closer to the end of it's discharge it gets sluggish and starts to act less snappy than even an 8.4V).

If your talkin about the day when we went for a swim, then yes my battery was also acting up. And that was the first time my 7.4 1200 saw daylight. It would be nice to find somthing that shows voltage regularities when introduced to temperature differences. In all honesty, I have been thinking about trying those hand warmers you can buy by putting them in my crane stock with my battery maybe that would help a bit?

What I have experienced in the last four winters with AEG's that all types of batteries lose some of their effectiveness on colder game days, I have found that the Lipo work better than the NiMH in general when the temp is hovering around -4C to +4C. The first two winters in my S-system I used 9.6 NiMH 1400mah, that would last me to lunch time then I would put in a new 9.6 NiMH 1100mah. On those colder days -4C to +1C I would have to use electrical tape to strap on those hand warmers, one on each side of the front grip to keep the battery warm. It was ugly but it worked. The bigger the battery mass the better it can handle the cold weather. last winter and this one The Lipo batteries have worked with no problems at all other than on the colder days they still work on problems just don't last as long as when it is a lot warmer.

Gunny as far as your power lost at last game? You might take a closer look at your main wires coming from your gun and the main leads coming from the battery and the soldering spots to the battery. If you have any loose / broken wires strand then a dress them. I bet that you will find broken wiring issues .

Shoot you later

thanks for all the help guys, i took a hard look a the battery and the wire on the masada. everything seems to be in order. i will use the same battery next gameday and see if its just the cold. worst case scenario i toss it out and get a new 11.1 lipo.

thanks for all the help guys
