I dont know what to look for with night vision. I wish to go to iceback, but I understand things may be difficult without them.
Im not really able to spend 1200$ on a gen II, but I am able to drop a good 500 or so. Does anyone have any recommendations? Is an optic like an ATN MK410 any good or would it be better going with NVGs?

Well the problem is there will be no moon so gen 1 will have a hard time with out constant ir flood of some sort. But if you really want it check out scout base camps web site they have a g1+ with ceramic tube so better that standard g1 and no gate like g2.

Here is a comparison of Gen 1, 2 and 3:

Don't bother with NV.
You don't need to sign up for Tier1 if you want to play at night. He just wants a rough estimate of people who will be dedicated to play through the night.
Allot of people are just signing up for the regular game and then playing into the night until they're tired. Very few people will have night vision and in my opinion unless your a Private Investigator, Voyeur or already own every airsoft related product you could ever wish for it's not worth buying night vision and a decent set will cost you at least $2000.

I have used/seen many NV units, and have many friends and teammates that have a ton of experience. Basic layout looks like this.
Gen 1: Waste of time. Difficult to use, and requires ideal conditions.
Cost: : $250 +/-
Gen 1+: Decent for the price, but needs a lot of ambient moon light, and a good quality IR (infrared) emitter, laser, or designator. It can be difficult to use, so ensure you have a proper mount and helmet fitted to your noggin'. Yukon is the brand to buy for quality and cost balance.
Cost: $500 +/-
Gen 2: Waste of time. Not a significant increase in performance, or tube quality from Gen 1+. It is definately overshadowed by the increase in cost for no real performance upgrade.
Cost: $1200 +/-
Gen 2+: A very solid product. Buy high end to avoid getting inferior or recycled tubes. It has a decent resistance to light sources such as flashlights and spot lights, and will work in minimal moonlight or ambient light. This is a the best for cost versus performance, and will make it easier to use in a vast array of environments.
Cost: $2000 +/-
Gen 3: Great product if you get the good tubes. Probably has auto-gating to completely drown any light interference. Very clear, but like a super Gen 2+......"Gen 2++ kinda".
Cost: $3000 +/-
Gen 3+: Really, really nice, fairly hard to find ones that are "true" Gen 3+.
Cost: $7000 +/-

IMO, If iceback would be your only incentive to make such a significant investment, I would suggest saving your money, in the lower mainland at least at this time, there are no organized night games, there might be a couple private games every once in a while where guys wear NV but few and far between!

Night vision isn't required for any night game. You can absolutely operate at night without it and still get a lot accomplished. It is a huge investment to get something that is going to perform to an acceptable level. A good flashlight with a red filter is the probably something to look into. Red filters don't affect your natural night vision.
