Hi LMAG,

New player here looking to get started in the sport hopefully within the next month or so. Anyways, I've got a question for you more seasoned players in the local scene; what's the most effective camo pattern for fields within the Lower Mainland? ie MRP, Panther, and... that's all that comes to mind... (er, disregard the fact that I don't have any plans to play at Panther for the moment, just throwing that field in there)

I'm currently building up my kit gear wise and haven't had a chance to go out to any of the local fields to take a look or play a game yet so I'm a little stumped on pattern selection. I'm leaning towards a Kryptek Mandrake based kit (that pattern is so damned sexy lol) eventually (Not a lot of gear manufacturers have Mandrake options yet...) but in the meanwhile I'm considering Highlander or Multicam.

Multicam seems like a good all-rounder while Highlander seems to be better oriented towards late summer/fall and would make for a good combo paired with Mandrake in the first half of the year... but waiting on emerson and hsgi to come out w/ mandrake stuff...

Anyways, pitch in your thoughts for a noob. I'm still building up gear and waiting on some essential pieces (Need my dang goggles and mags) before I have the opportunity to come out to a game, whether it be with LMAG or Omega-ops.

Best patterns for BC is Marpat, Cadpat, AOR2, and russian partisan.

Most fields in lower mainland you need green pattern (spring/early summer) and brown (late summer/fall/winter). We wear Russian Partizan and it's reversible. It's a 2 in 1 camo and it works great all season except in the snow.

The Kryptek Mandrake pattern is actually pretty decent and fairly rare. If you like to look unique but still blend in it may be a great choice. Cadpat is a local favorite and it works fairly well at MRP. Marpat also works, personally I think it fits in very well at Panther. AOR2 is another great choice, it is kinda a happy medium between Cadpat and Marpat in my opinion. To be honest if you go with any camo that has a lot of green, and don't move, you can stay fairly hidden.

Multicam is a popular choice, it'll work well in nearly every environment, and often beats out specific camos in their intended environments. Multicam gear can be found almost anywhere, and probably has the best selection of high quality gear.

AOR2 makes a decent transitional as well, but is more green, but will work well in woodland, which it is intended for, but also a few lighter environments as well.

Testing from my SSF buddies has turned up that Mandrake and Multicam tropic is kicking serious ass in woodland/jungle environments. Kryptek gear can be purchased at DS Tactical in New West.

Most digital patterns either flop badly, or only work in restricted areas. Marpat isn't bad, but is mediocre for effect. UCP (ACU) is useless almost everywhere, and Cadpat is nearly as bad. Cadpat will work decent in dark forestland, but most green or transitional patterns kick its ass badly. In fact the CF is now dropping it due to complaints. It looks like relish anyways.

A-Tacs FG is decent, but we found that multicam and AOR2 do the same job but better.

Could we get more insight in your experience with Mandrake and MC Tropic?

I use a Hyperstealth pattern which is somewhat digital. Any opinion on "Spec4ce" Canuck?

I didn't realize you could buy Multicam tropic yet? Regular Multicam does not blend all that well at MRP because there is so much green all around you, but Multicam tropic may work great when it's available.

I'm not a big fan of digital camo for some reason; I've seen Cadpat in use and its effective in its intended environment but I just don't care for the look of it too much.

The Russian Partizan is interesting as I do plan on building a russian based kit down the line; kinda like the Russian smersh webbing/vest & the two toned gorka's.

As some of you guys have mentioned here and on ASC, brown works well for the latter half of the year at most of the fields here but would Highlander work as well or would it be a little too bright/tan?

I've already tested Mandrake and like Ricochet said, it works very very well but like I said, kit wise there aren't a lot of options out there at the moment (waiting on a Mandrake Banshee & Suregrip to come out) so I'm just waiting on manufacturers to come out with Mandrake options before I jump on it completely. I was originally going to go with MC tropic but after seeing the Mandrake pattern in person and testing it out in the backyard I kinda feel it'd outperform MC tropic a bit and it looks pretty neat so +1 on that.

Oh and the main reason I'm asking about Kryptek Highlander & MC is because I just ordered a Suregrip belt setup when they had their 15% off fb sale two days ago. Ordered it in MC but I'm thinking about changing it to Highlander as some of the pics of MC gear I've seen in game pics seem kinda bright and stand out somewhat from the surrounding environment.

Biggest reason I'm considering MC is pretty much because of exactly what Ricochet said about it. Pretty much everyone who manufactures gear offers something in MC.

A-Tacs FG is decent, but we found that multicam and AOR2 do the same job but better.

Somewhat surprised to hear MC works as well A-Tacs FG. I would've assumed it A-tacs would've worked better considering it seems to have more greener tones than MC.

PS. I like gear in general so I have a feeling I'll be collecting quite a bit of it as I get started in the sport lol
