My first AEG was a G&P Canadian Carbine I got from the boxing day sale at torontoairsoft.com, it is a $500 gun but I paid $200 (they only had 5 at that price). I am glad that I bought it, it has been one fantastic gun. I've probably spent another $200 on externals and small upgrades, but so far it has been an extremely reliable rifle. I have handled a few other G&P M4's since then as well and have always found them to be very good quality.
Technically I did buy a JG G36C at the same time (also on sale for cheap), this was intended to be my backup AEG, and since I didn't really want to break the M4 I also played around with the gearbox and such on this gun, kinda my learning gun. I wouldn't really recommend it as a first gun though, the use of some metal parts and some plastic on the internals have caused a number of small parts to break and require replacements, after breaking it a few times I've actually decided that after I fix it back up this time I'm going to part ways with this rifle.
