Are you using GPS to plot these markers?

Right now, I'm manually selecting landmarks on the photo and letting the software adjust the image to fit the map. This way I might add in errors.

If you want them to end up more precisely, I can use the GPX file exported from your GPS. With a GPX, you would get the points just as if you read them off your GPS.
